This evergeen, fast growing, medium sized, clump forming, very hardy, tufted perennial has a reddish brown colour with a wide, flattened, hairy leaf blade and have a membrane ligule.
It flowers from December to April and the racemes are paired, borne terminally on the culm.
The spikelets are paired, glabrous with an awn, the other awnless with a hairy pedicel.
The palatibility of this grass is medium and it decreases as the grass matures.
It is stunning when planted en masse and needs to be cut back in winter.
