Description

Pelargonium papilionaceum is a hardy, evergreen, fast growing, drought resistant shrub. The attractive heart-shaped leaves have a strong smell when crushed. The striking flowers are borne from August to January. They are light pink to carmine with two large upper petals marked with a dark purple blotch next to a white blotch and three very narrow lower petals. The flowers resemble delicate butterflies. The flowers attract sunbirds and many insects to the garden.

Plant in shade, in well drained soil, where it makes a beautiful backdrop to a flower bed.

Size: up to 2m

Uses

Horticultural: A good plant for the back of shady flower beds. If pruned regularly, a good container plant for shady balconies and patios.

Eastern Cape, Western Cape

Natural Habitat Usually close to streams, on the fringe of forests or in steep sided wooded ravines and valleys (kloofs).
