This dwarf, succulent shrub is more or less stemless or may form creeping stems. It has numerous lance-shaped, blue-green leaves with white edges, armed with numerous firm white prickles, arranged in basal rosettes. The leaves are erect, but the upper third become recurved and have no lines or spots..
The inflorescence is branched horizontically and carries upturned flowers from July to August, with red flower buds that turn dull pinkish-white as it matures. The common name, Knoppiesaalwyn, is derived from the globular shape of the buds and flowers, as they become much wider towards the mouth.
The Knoppiesaalwyn makes an attractive addition to gardens because of its unusual bluish leaves with white margins.
