On September 10, 2015 the discovery of Homo Naledi was announced.
The discovery was made in a part of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site situated in Magaliesberg.
The discovery actually took place in October 2013 with excavations only beginning in November 2013.
The retrieval expedition was called the Rising Star Expedition and took place over 21 days, a 2nd 4 week expedition in the Dinaledi Chamber took place in March 2014.
This historic discovery is the single largest fossil hominin find in Africa with 15 individuals of the same species being recovered so far.
Evidence indicates that Naledi purposely placed the bodies of their dead in a remote and largely inaccessible (with the access passage as narrow as 19 cm) cave chamber in order to protect them from wild animals and natural elements.
This is remarkable because this type of ritual behaviour is believed to be unique only to the human species.
