Dear Indigenous Enthusiast,
I am just dropping you a short newsletter to let you know about a few happenings in the nursery. I will send you the full newsletter later.
The main event I wanted to tell you about is the Bird Walk on the 20th February. I am sorry to give you such short notice but I have been so busy and time just ran away with me.
Bird Walk
André Marx’ bird walks have become a real institution at Random Harvest Nursery. We are so privileged to have this remarkably knowledgeable man leading groups on bird spotting walks around the farm on a regular basis.
We have over 150 confirmed bird species that visit the farm.
Random Harvest will be donating all of the funds paid for the bird walk to SARDA (South African Riding for the Disabled). This non-profit organisation makes an amazing difference in the lives of the disabled with therapy through horse-riding. They do this work with masses of passion and get amazing results. Go to the website www.sarda.co.za for more information
Dates: 20th February
Time: 6.30 for 7.00am
Cost: R125.00 per person including a welcome coffee and rusks and breakfast with Andre afterwards.
To Book: contact David or Thabo at our reception area on [email protected] or 082?553 0598
Displays
I would also like to remind you that we have 2 lovely new displays to inspire you.
Forest Garden
If you have a garden with mature trees, you would be wondering how to take advantage of the shade.
The courtyard forest garden has proved to be a huge hit with our customers, with weekends seeing people queuing to get in and have a closer look!
Butterfly Container Garden
The Butterfly Balcony Garden is our latest display garden to give you loads of inspiration on creating beautiful yet functional gardens in tiny spaces.
I like to call indigenous gardening “intelligent” gardening, as all the plants are not only carefully chosen for our enjoyment but for the survival of the creatures that share our green spaces as well.
If all that is available in terms of outdoor space is a concrete or paved area, then one can easily garden to great effect in containers.
“Create a Butterfly Balcony Garden” [hyperlink] gives you some great tips on what to include in order to make the garden most attractive to these beautiful winged creatures.
I thought I really had to let you know about the bird walk as it is almost time for migrants to be leaving us and hopefully you will still see the Paradise Flycatchers.
There have been 4 different herons down at the dam, Purple, Black Headed, Green Backed Night Heron and Black Crowned Night Heron. I think it is going to be an interesting walk.
By the way the Spotted Eagle Owls have been very vocal over the last two weeks. How great it is to be serenaded by them and the frogs at night.
Hope to see you at the bird walk.
Sincerely
Linda
